2024 Referendum - Thank You
Dear SDSM Families, Staff, and Larger Community
Based on preliminary results, our community has approved the operational referendum question for the School District of South Milwaukee on Tuesday, April 2.
As a result, we will be able to exceed the district’s revenue limit by $2 million per year for the next five years. This investment by the community will allow us to ensure our students remain Safe, Supported, and Successful by:
-
Prioritizing security upgrades with additional camera views and door locks requiring electronic keyfob swipes while also taking measures to improve traffic safety on 15th Avenue;
-
Addressing projected budget deficits and ensuring the district remains competitive with teacher and staff compensation so we can provide continuity and stability for students; and
-
Enhancing career exploration starting in elementary school to expose students to more career-specific skills. They will have access to intentional planning to ensure they take advantage of all the courses we offer and have access to current technology.
Our School Board asked the community to imagine what’s possible. We appreciate that so many people took the time to engage with us, to learn about our schools' challenges and opportunities, and find the information needed to make an informed vote.
We also heard from community members that they were worried the funds would not be used effectively. Over the next five years, we plan to share exactly how the dollars are spent so our community can see what this investment means to our schools.
Once again, thank you.
Sincerely,
Deidre Roemer
Superintendent
