Safety Upgrades Near Rawson Elementary School

The School District and City of South Milwaukee are collaborating again to make improvements in our community! The city, using a 2024 Referendum-funded traffic study from the school district and its own review of traffic on Rawson Avenue, has removed the stoplight on 14th Avenue and Rawson Avenue and is installing safer crosswalks.

Here's a timeline of the process that led to the changes on Rawson Avenue. 

Dates:

  • April 26th, 2024 - Admin meets with traffic study firms to discuss a potential study
  • May 7th, 2024 - Decision is made to move forward with raSmith to conduct the traffic study along 15th and Rawson 
  • Late May 2024 - raSmith performed a traffic study
  • August 2024 - Admin team reviewed traffic study, proposed traffic changes to 15th Ave and high school drop off
  • September 3rd, 2024 - new traffic pattern at 6-12 campus goes into effect
  • October 2, 2024 - school board reviews referendum update, which discusses the traffic study
  • December 11, 2024 - School board approves MOU with the city to construct a crosswalk by Rawson Elementary
  • Winter 2025 - City procures traffic beacon 
  • Winter / Spring 2025 - 
    • City conducts its own research on the traffic and parking implications of constructing a crosswalk across Rawson Avenue
    • City analyzes traffic patterns to confirm if the stoplight on 14th Avenue can be demolished
  • May 9, 2025 - City notifies school district that the tentative construction timeline is June 16 - Aug 31
  • July 1st. 2025 - City hosts pre-construction meeting at which time it is confirmed that the crosswalk will be completed before school starts
  • July 30th, 2025 - City confirms that the project is still on schedule to be completed before school starts for 25-26
