FIRST® Lego® League

Dear Parent/Guardian,

The South Milwaukee School District in partnership with Caterpillar, Inc. is proud to announce the third year of a FIRST® Lego® League (FLL) team at the SM Middle School.  Funding and equipment have already been provided by Caterpillar and space has been reserved in the Technology Education Department at the Middle School.

FLL is a program for middle school students to learn about teamwork, technology, and research in a fun and exciting way.  This year’s theme is “TRASH TREK”.

The team will have three major challenges:

  1. Conduct a research project to find a solution to a problem  (Challenge details will be released on August 25th)
  2. Work as a team on FLL core values
  3. Design, build and program a LEGO robot to perform tasks and get points in the qualifying tournament.

Caterpillar will fund the program for one FLL team of up to 10 students. This means we are looking to find 2-4 dedicated students from each grade level 6-8. The FLL season will be carried out in a similar fashion to any other sport/student group, with regular attendance and participation required from each team member.

FIRST is dedicated to preparing our youth to be our future.  As such, a certain level of responsibility is required of the student and of you as the parent or guardian.  The mentors are offering their time and energy to teach your child how to work as an effective team member, and how to use technology to make their world a better place.  This is a professional atmosphere, and we will require you as the parent/guardian to help us enforce our values.

Student meetings will be held at 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Tuesday and Thursday throughout the months of September, October, and November. A qualifying tournament will be held in November. Students must be able to commit to all meetings in order to be considered for the team.
